Grandma Herman's Monkey Bread and Holiday Thumbprint Cookies

Monkey Bread

Ingredients:

3 cups
3/4 tbsp.
1/4 tbsp.
1/3 cup
1 each
1/2 cup
2/3 cup
5 tbsp.
2 pkgs.
1/2 cup
1/4 cup

flour
salt
mace
sugar
egg - well beaten
evaporated milk
lukewarm water
butter - melted
dry yeast
walnuts - chopped (optional)
golden raisins (optional)


Cinnamon Sugar Ingredients:

1/2 cup
1 tsp.
sugar
cinnamon

Method:

Combine flour, salt, mace and sugar.

In separate bowl, combine egg, milk, 1/3 cup lukewarm water and 2 tbsp. melted butter.

Dissolve yeast in remaining lukewarm water. Add to egg mixture and mix well. Stir in all dry ingredients except for cinnamon sugar ingredients and mix well.

Knead on lightly floured board until smooth. Place in a well-greased bowl, turning once to bring greased side up. Cover. Let rise in warm place until double (approx. 1 hour)

Punch down dough and divide into small balls (approx. 40). Roll each ball in melted butter, then in cinnamon sugar mixture. Place one layer of balls in well-greased tube pan.

Sprinkle with ½ cup chopped walnuts and/or ¼ cup golden raisins if desired.
Make another layer with remaining dough balls and sprinkle with any remaining butter and cinnamon sugar mixture.

Let rise approximately 1 hour until nearly doubled in size. Bake at 325˚ for
40-45 minutes.

Grandma Herman's Holiday Thumbprint Cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup
1 each
1/4 cup
1/2 tsp.
1 cup
1/4 tsp.
1/2 cup
butter - softened
egg yolk (save egg white)
brown sugar
vanilla
flour
salt
walnuts - finely chopped

Method:

Mix together butter, egg yolk, sugar & vanilla. Stir in flour and salt.

Roll into 1 inch balls. Dip into slightly beaten egg white. Roll in finely chopped walnuts. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 5 minutes at 375˚.

Remove from oven and quickly press thumb gently into top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer. Place jelly or icing in thumbprint after cookie has cooled completely.
